Wine Tasting Networking Event Summary

Wine and Sunshine – With Thinkers’ Group and Qwinze Direct

What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than basking in the Fall sunshine and enjoying some of the finest wines on offer in Beijing. Last weekend individuals from all over Beijing convened at Solana’s fabulous Pacific Blue restaurant to sample fine wines, network and spend time savoring the view out over the lake and drinking in the all too rare clear blue skies. As always conversation was in full flow from the outset and there was plenty of opportunity to get to know everyone. Saturday’s event was the perfect opportunity to allow attendees to get to know each other and enjoy the offerings of our partner Qwinze Direct.

Qwinze Direct are well versed in not only providing excellent taste but also helping individuals learn about what they are drinking. They laid on a dazzling array of wines from several continents and provided informational materials to help attendees navigate around the subtle hues and aromas of the world of wine. The story of Qwinze Direct is something of an adventure in itself. Since their arrival in Beijing seven years ago, the company has seen interest grow year on year as word has spread about the variety on offer. Harking from Melbourne, Australia founder Danny Wu has demonstrated not only first rate knowledge of wine but also a canny ability to present wine to a younger audience. No longer is it the preserve of only the rich. Qwinze Direct have shown that wine can be enjoyed by a wider swathe of the Expat population. Now in the process of opening their second store in the city, Qwinze are looking forward to a continuation of their introduction of new world wines in the Beijing market. Judging from Saturday’s offering, they have arrived at a great formula which is sure to both educate and inspire. But amidst the heritage there’s still room for some experimentation. A number of liquors and spirits were on offer. The Sichuan style peppery spirit proved to be a hit as well as a number of fruity liquors and crèmes.

Of course, there is nothing like a drop of wine to ease conversation and Saturday was no exception. With such a range of industries and backgrounds represented there was plenty to talk about and pointed enthusiasm about the topic and speaker for the next T Group event. If success in China is truly your goal and you enjoy meeting interesting people then there is really no reason not to clear your diary for the third Saturday afternoon of every month. Details for the next Thinkers’ Group event will be posted shortly on the group’s website. Be sure to register to avoid disappointment as admittance will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Wishing On A…Cloud? The Future Of The Internet Industry – Cloud Computing Event Summary

Glancing at the attention grabbing title of last Saturday’s Thinkers’ Group event: The Future Of The Internet Industry – Cloud Computing one could have rightly wondered whether this was merely an a triumph of fiction over fact. It was reassuring, however to meet the speaker Mr Ju Zhang. As a Google veteran and now COO of Yoyo Systems, Mr Zhang is more than qualified to shed light on the relatively new idea of ‘cloud computing’. As one of China’s leading experts on this topic, he was able to forecast how cloud computing will transform the way that data is stored, discarded and used in commercial and non commercial operations. Although it is already being used by some of the more forward looking developers, its scale has yet to be realized. In the same way that the popularity of the Personal Computer and the World Wide Web took many by surprise, it seems that ‘’The Cloud” could exceed even the most ambitious of forecasts.

True to the Thinkers’ Group ethos of facilitating attendees to succeed in doing business in China, there was plenty of consideration of the commercial aspects of cloud computing: one major benefit being the cost savings that it can offer to companies which must maintain a large number of servers (essentially the super computers that keep information flowing in a network). Mr Zhang also provided a survey of past efforts by well established companies to develop cloud computing services. Surveying the marketplace, Google appears to be leading the charge into this brave new world of cloud computing, as well as the development of weird and wonderful products and applications which have until now been confined to Science Fiction film sets. As for Google’s relationship with China, it seems that could yet be rekindled if the right opportunities come along. Cloud computing could be just that opportunity.

Overall, cloud computing can seem technical and obscure yet as with many high tech concepts the term could be on everybody’s lips and part of the fabric of everyday life sooner than you might expect. Perhaps cloud computing will be the next phenomenon to sweep Zhongguancun, with many consulting firms and their copycats setting up shop to set up systems for companies throughout China. The possibilities do seem endless, and it is fascinating to hear the perspective of an industry expert and think of what could soon be.

China Arts and Antiques Networking Event

The Thinker Group meeting on Saturday was a veritable feast of art and culture, with respected professor Zhao Li. Sharing his insights, predictions and views on the commercial art market in China. Collectors and artists have been sitting up to take notice of China in recent years as it sits poised to overtake the United Kingdom as the number one location for buying and selling art works. These are certainly exciting times for all of those with an eye for flair and a sense for something unique.

As always at The Thinker Group events, the conversation flowed freely following the talk and there were abundant opportunities to meet with people from all over the world and China. It really is testament to the fact that as China develops it is influencing many fields and having a major impact. With over sixty galleries and millions of dollars changing hands every month, Beijing is a key center of gravity in this ever changing industry. Professional translation and question and answer session followed the lecture.
